Pregnant woman declared brain dead is kept alive under Georgia’s abortion ban

Synopsis

Adriana Smith, a 30-year-old nurse from Atlanta, was declared brain dead after a medical emergency. But because she was pregnant, she had been kept on life support for over 4 months.

Her mother told 11Alive reporter Cody Alcorn that Georgia’s abortion ban wouldn’t allow them to take her off life support in February, which would have ended Adriana’s pregnancy. Instead, the hospital kept Adriana’s body alive until her baby could be born. Her mother said they were never given a choice, Georgia’s abortion ban made their choice for them.

Editor’s note: The hospital performed an emergency C-section on Adriana on June 13, 2025 and after her son was born, her family was then able to make the decision to take Adriana off life support.

This decision should’ve been left to us. Now we’re left wondering what kind of life he’ll have—and we’re going to be the ones raising him.
