Synopsis
Kayleigh Garcia Roffino was a college student in Dallas when she found out she was pregnant. With a clinic just 15 minutes away, she was able to get an abortion—something many Texans couldn’t do after restrictions shuttered clinics across the state in 2015. She made the decision after realizing she wasn’t ready to become a mother, especially while navigating an abusive relationship. That choice, she says, made her future possible. Now, with an abortion ban in place in her state, she worries that other Texans won’t have the same chance she did.
Kayleigh spoke with Abortion in America in Austin, Texas to bring greater attention and awareness to the experiences of people living in states with abortion bans.
My biggest pro was that I desperately, desperately wanted to be a mother. My con was that my boyfriend very often got drunk and decided to put me in dangerous situations.
