Abortion in America

A Marine, a mother, and her abortion that let her keep both roles.

Synopsis

Marine veteran Joanna Sweatt made the decision to have an abortion while she was serving in the military.

She made her decision like so many others—so she could care for the children she already had and continue serving her country. Navigating a complex and limited military health system, she had to travel to another base to get the care she needed, but she knows that without Roe, servicewomen today face even greater barriers.

Joanna Sweatt spoke with Abortion in America in Austin, Texas to bring greater attention and awareness to the experiences of people living in states with abortion bans.

It’s sad to me as a woman who has raised their right hand to defend this nation to sacrifice my life and to not have bodily autonomy or the right to make the decision for myself or my family.
