A reverend was in danger of bleeding out. Missouri’s abortion ban made her afraid to get the help she needed.

Synopsis

When Reverend Dr. Love Holt began bleeding heavily after taking abortion pills at home in Missouri, she didn’t feel safe going to the hospital. As a Black mom living under one of the country’s strictest abortion bans, she was afraid of going to jail if doctors found out she had taken abortion pills. When she ultimately got to the ER, she told the medical team she was having a miscarriage and quietly hoped they wouldn’t call the police. After her experience, Rev. Dr. Holt was the first woman to publicly testify to Congress about taking abortion pills and the fear abortion bans can cause when women make that choice.

Rev. Dr. Holt spoke with Abortion in America in Austin, Texas to bring greater attention and awareness to the experiences of people living in states with abortion bans.
