The Abortion That Made Me a Parent
Synopsis
Jayme Serbell was halfway through a twin pregnancy when doctors discovered that one of her sons was dying, putting the life of his healthy twin brother at risk. Because her doctors in New Mexico were unable to provide the abortion she needed, she was forced to travel to Colorado for a procedure that ended the life of one twin in order to save the other, carrying both sons for the remainder of her pregnancy. In a personal essay for Vogue, Serbell reflects on grief, motherhood, and how abortion became part of her journey to becoming a parent.
We needed to end Killian’s life in order to save Seamus’s.
