Abortion in America
They lived in a “haven state.” They still had to fly to Colorado for an abortion.
Synopsis
In 2016, Erika Christensen and Garin Marschall were many months into a complicated pregnancy when doctors told them their baby wouldn’t survive. They needed to end the pregnancy. But even with legal abortion still in place through Roe v. Wade, Erika and Garin couldn’t get an abortion in their home state of New York. Erika was too far into the third trimester. They were forced to spend thousands of dollars to fly to Colorado for medical care—an experience families are increasingly facing across the country.
Erika and Garin spoke with Abortion in America in Austin, Texas to bring greater attention and awareness to the experiences of people living in states with abortion bans.
Seeing someone that you love be treated this way by the state — by these powerful systems — was difficult.

A reverend was in danger of bleeding out. Missouri’s abortion ban made her afraid to get the help she needed.

A North Texas nurse wanted to ease her baby’s suffering. She had to leave Texas to do it.
