New Mexico group creates haven for Texas abortion seekers
Synopsis
Marin Wolf for The Dallas Morning News follows the collaboration between the First Unitarian Church of Dallas and the New Mexico Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, who partnered to create a safe haven for Texans seeking abortions out of state. Together, they pay fly patients from Texas to Albuquerque to get abortion care, where New Mexico’s abortion laws protect patients and providers. The group flies out at least 10 Texans each week, whose life experiences fall under a spectrum of care, their ages ranging from 9 to 48.
Small but meaningful gestures — like cozy cots, eye masks, and heartfelt messages on the walls — warmly welcome patients. Travelers are greeted with snacks, tea, and even support from other patients, creating a space where they feel cared for and protected. It’s a stark difference from the punishing atmosphere created by Texas’ abortion bans.
‘Do not feel ashamed because you made a choice for your life,’ one client wrote. ‘Just know you are not alone.’
