Abortion in America
Texas’ abortion ban forced Amanda and Josh Zurawski to wait until she nearly died to receive care
Synopsis
Texas’ near-total abortion ban took effect the same week Amanda Zurawski’s water broke.
At just under 18 weeks pregnant, Amanda’s doctors told her there was no hope of giving birth to a baby who would survive. Her own health was at risk, too; the risk of developing an infection was imminent if she wasn’t treated quickly enough. But because of her state’s abortion ban, Amanda and her husband, Josh, were forced to wait until she developed sepsis to provide the life-saving care she needed.
Amanda and Josh spoke with Abortion in America in Austin, Texas to bring greater attention and awareness to the experiences of people living in states with abortion bans.
Either the baby’s heart had to stop or I had to be considered on death’s door before the doctors could do anything.
