Two Louisiana advocates discuss friendship, trauma, and the fight for survivors’ rights

Audrey Hayworth and Morgan Lamandre, colleagues and longtime friends, discuss their shared work advocating for survivors of sexual violence and the impact of Louisiana’s abortion ban. Audrey, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, recounts a pivotal moment when Morgan supported her through reporting newly discovered photos of her abuse to the FBI. As her attorney and friend, Morgan was by Audrey’s side during one of the most difficult moments of her life, highlighting the deep trust and partnership they share.

Their conversation also touches on the broader implications of Louisiana’s abortion ban, particularly for survivors of rape and incest. Both Audrey and Morgan express frustration over the state’s legal environment, which they describe as punishing survivors and depriving them of necessary healthcare options. Audrey reflects on how, despite years of advocacy, many systemic failures from decades ago still persist, making it even harder for survivors to access the care and support they need.

Despite the many challenges, the two women also celebrate the strength and resilience of survivors. They reflect on the impact of their advocacy work and how their collaboration has allowed them to fight for justice, even in a difficult legal climate. Their commitment to supporting survivors and addressing systemic injustices drives them forward, giving hope that their work will inspire change.

What keeps me up at night are other little girls… survivors who won’t have access to options if Plan B fails, or they don’t get it in time.
