When Rachel Harrison’s water broke three months into her pregnancy, she lost all her amniotic fluid and needed an emergency abortion to prevent life-threatening infection. But at the Catholic hospital her insurance directed her towards in Carmichael, California, she was denied treatment on religious grounds.
The same emergency happened again months later, and again, she was denied abortion care. This delay left Rachel with an infection that nearly killed her. San Francisco Chronicle’s Matthias Gafni shares her story.
